Nathan is a medical student planning to be an ophthalmologist. He received his PhD studying plant breeding and genetics from Clemson University where he helped identify genetic markers associated with nutritional traits in legumes. He is currently helping to identify small molecules that promote pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) in retinal pigment epithelium cells. PEDF regulation is a potential mechanism for treating retinal degenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration. In his free time, he enjoys playing with his kids, hiking, fishing, and tennis.
